About

Who is Gadrew Way?

Four women, four experienced musicians. An all-female string quartet that has been playing together since 2010. The quartet's very first performance was a tour with the band Čechomor. Since then the ensemble has refined its repertoire, played hundreds of concerts, and released a debut album in 2020. We're currently preparing a new recording inspired by folk music.

On the surface a classical string quartet, but in reality an ensemble with a style all its own. A striking feature is the expressive vocal performance of first violinist, composer and actress Gabriela Vermelho, who switches between the violin and a five-string quinton.

The repertoire is anything but conventional: original compositions, Czech and Moravian folk songs, Jewish music, Argentine tango, Balkan melodies, jazz and contemporary pieces.

We love playing together, and we play what we enjoy. It turns out the energy, humour on stage and the synergy the quartet radiates delight our audiences too – which is why they keep coming back.

Folk Music by Gadrew Way

Folk songs mostly from southern Moravia, plus tunes that became folk classics – for example from Miloš Štědroň's Ballad for a Bandit. Most arrangements are by Gabriela Vermelho, with a handful of pieces by other composers devoted to folk music.
